I had a hankering to go to Charleston whilst we were away but 'A' reminded me that we'd been three times already, and as the forecast was for the hottest day of the year with no rain we decided to go to the seaside instead. There are lots of nice beaches in Sussex, we chose Brighton. It wasn't going to be quiet...it's not a quaint little town but a real old English seaside one...with a great buzz. It was the first week of school summer holidays and a good forecast...It turned out that everyone else decided to go to Brighton that day too, including all the news crews...I don't blame them it's much more fun on a sunny day than being cramped up in a stuffy studio...
It's impossible for us to go to the seaside and not eat fish and chips, preferably out of newspaper. So we did...with all the trimmings (except the newspaper)...tomato ketchup, tartare sauce, mushy peas and lashings of salt and vinegar...It was absolutely delicious to enjoy sitting on the pier and looking out at miles of bright blue sea. I'm not usually a chip fan but they were divine especially the little crunchy bits left behind in the box...I couldn't quite manage all the batter but it was scrummy. I did feel a bit bloated the next day...it was well worth it...
I would never make fish and chips at home...they just don't taste the same. But I did cook little sprats for lunch one day. In a hot pan with a tad of oil, salt and pepper and lots of fresh lime juice and good brown bread. They make a meltingly delicious sandwich filling and take minutes to cook.
what INCREDIBLE photo's!!! it looks like somewhere entirely different, like America but it is indeed Brighton!... fab times!
ReplyDeleteWOW thanks Dom...I know...I thought that too...The light was amazing for photographing that day.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to be at the beach, there is something about the air and the sights and the sounds, you captured it beautifully :)
ReplyDeleteI agree it's just so good sometimes to escape there and breath in all that lovely sea air and dip your toes or maybe more in the water...

Why thank you Avril
DeleteGreat photos of Brighton and the Pier. Brighton is where I learnt to make homemade pasta and had a lovely weekend back in 2011.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't made my home made pasta yet but I've made the ricotta/spinach filling and will hopefully do it today. I hope mine is anything like as good as yours looks.
ReplyDeleteThe tarot cart is intriguing. Thank you for such great photos; it makes me want to hop on a plane now. Fish and chips are high on my husband's list of yummy food. He enjoyed himself thoroughly when we visited GB years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't go in but I could hear someone having a consultation as we walked past. I just loved the old painted gypsy wagon.
DeleteThe fish and chips were delicious but I'm sure had about a million calories...but it wouldn't be a trip to the seaside without them...
I haven't been on that pier for quite a while but your lovely pics tell me that, happily, it's not changed too much. You've just got to have fish and chips at the seaside - it's the perfect combination. If I'm in the north of the country, then it has to be with a slice of bread and butter.
ReplyDeleteI'm originally from the north of england Phil...so agree about the bread and butter oh and a cup of PG tips!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post and I recognise so many of these places from tv programmes filmed in Brighton.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah. That's interesting there are lots of film and literary connections with Brighton...it's has a great atmosphere...lots of creative people seem to migrate there...
ReplyDeleteBlue sky and blue see - incredible! Fantastic photos too.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely day that made it perfect for taking photos...amazing light. I've got some more to post from that week...I must get around to it.
