"There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won't cure but I don't know many of them." Sylvia Plath
Yey...we have a bathroom... It may not have a door, and the walls aren't quite built so they have big holes in them...The floor hasn't been laid, the toilet or wash basin fitted, no tiling or prettying up yet. But all the essential out-of-sight boring pipe laying and plumbing bits have been done, so those things will soon get sorted. But we have a bath and hot water running into it... WE HAVE A BATH...
Last night I couldn't wait any longer to use it. So I fashioned some makeshift curtains and lit candles and tea-lights because I love candle baths, but also because I imagine that you can see through those holes in the wall into the bathroom through the kitchen window from the road while some of the garden panels are down. I sneaked in like a Victorian housewife with hand made soap and knitted cotton wash-cloth and lingered for a long time in the hot soapy water until I eventually tore myself from the fragrant tub before I dissolved. It was so good...
...I wholeheartedly agree with Sylvia...
...don't you?

That's so beautiful, you've inspired me to go and run a bath right now! Though, sigh, I may have to clean it first. Hope all is well (though if you have a bath, it must be!) I am going to treat myself to a big Cooking up a storm reading binge this weekend (though not in the bath) xx
ReplyDeleteHi Lucy. Thank you, it was wonderful. You should...Go now and do it...it's a pain about the cleaning but really worth the effort. Oh and reading in the bath, I'd forgotten all about that...even better...
DeleteHave a great weekend,
debx
it's something i never take for granted....because, we only have showers! so, when we travel, one of my real treats is that long, slow soak!!!! it sounds like you all have really turned the corner....on to the finishing work with the prep work finally behind you!
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel Steph, there is something so relaxing about a long hot bath. Yes we can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel. The kitchen is full of tools and dust again but all is good and soon it will be just the fun making blinds and cushions...and hopefully knitting blankets like the lovely ones I keep seeing over on your blog.
DeleteHave a great valentines weekend.

Oh, Debby, I know how you felt when that bath was finally installed. We had only showers in the house for a long time, and with our addition, we finally installed an old claw foot tub under the stairs. The little room only had a tub in it, but it is perfect. Nothing like a long, hot soak in a tub...
ReplyDeleteYour bath looks so charming, even in its unfinished state. So happy you were able to enjoy a soothing soak.
Happy Valentine's Day!
It's so good Emily. We used to have an old roll top bath growing up. I remember if we had bubble bath we would make a water slide down into the bubbly water. I pity my poor mother having to clean up the bathroom after bath-time with four little girls splashing around.
DeleteYour little bath room sounds like a perfect sanctuary to escape to for some much deserved peace and quite.
Happy days,

I wholeheartedly agree with Sylvia also! When we gave up a house in Maine that had a claw-foot tub, my consolation prize was that we re-did this bathroom and ordered a deeper-than usual tub. Not as good as a clawfoot soak, but pretty darned relaxing nonetheless! A good bath, in my book, requires one of two things: either a good novel to read OR candle light and music (and possibly a little white wine). Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteErin
Oh definitely...I am with you on the reading in the bath Erin, and the glass of wine along with the candles..I manage to enjoy all three this weekend without getting the book soggy!
