yarn along

To begin with it looked easy but then I struggled... I thought I needed to be some kind of grown up Charlotte to work the five needles and spin the lacy web. But when you keep going and cast on three, or even four times and succeed at last to join those four needles and knit with the fifth, you can give yourself a big pat on the back for not giving up. IT IS SO EASY once you've done that, to knit this cute Rachel bag by
Handy Kitty, a sweet extra summer birthday gift, the one that I first saw on Lori's blog here, and now I can't put it down. I'm sure that I will make lots more and maybe one day I'll even make one of those complicated lacy fragile shawls

I'm still reading Paris was a woman :: portraits from the left bank. It's an easy read a fascinating biography of some of the great women writers and publishers of the left bank at the turn of the last century. But I'm also reading River Cottage, Light & easy :: Healthy recipes for every day. A belated Christmas present from one of my sisters...Did you see the cute card...

I do read recipe books especially ones with a tale to tell. This one is just what I need at the moment. Something to direct me towards fast, healthy food  and introduce me to new ingredients...I'm looking forward to trying out different grains or alternative oils...I'll let you know how I get on...

...do you read recipe books too?

  3. You're doing a great job with that complicated pattern. Can't wait to finish my granddaughter's sweater so I can knit something fun. I used to read cookbooks, but got too fat! So I had to take my mind off of food. I love the old depression era ones, especially if they have menus. Those were the days! No one cared a fig about calories or cholesterol back then.

    1. Oh I love making baby things too. I hope that you share some new baby photos soon Jane. I love to read all cookery books...new and old, full of social history and nostalgia. It's amazing how recipes change over the decades.
      Happy knitting,

  4. This looks so so clever. Love that card, and yes I most definitely read cook books - nothing better when the recipes are intertwined with the authors story. I particularly liked Stephanie Alexanders "Stephanie's Journal" not sure if you can get it in the UK although Book Depository have most things. But even normal cook books I love to pour over them without actually cooking anything!

    1. Once I got the hang of the cast on it was so much easier than it looks. I just had a bit of a shaky start. I love the ones with lots of text and little memories about recipes too. I haven't heard of Stephanie Alexanders but will look her up now. There's something very cosy and homely about reading about food.
      Have a good day,

  5. The card is hilarious. It reminds me of something my youngest son told me the other day..."sheep are such hipsters they wear your sweater before it's even made". Ha ha.

Your lacy project looks very intriguing. I'm off to follow the link. Thanks for sharing.

  7. That card is amazing. What a great and clever artist.
I love the Rachel bag, especially since Rachel is my daughter's name.
I love reading cookbooks, too. My favorite these days is the Smitten Kitten.
