FESTIVAL- into the wilderness...butterflies, budha bowls, dinasaur tails, beautiful Bjork and honeysuckle cordial

“I do not understand how anyone can live without some small place of enchantment to turn to.”
 Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

A surprise invitation. Mentioned long ago in passing, I'd dreamed about going...but we'd moved away and it seemed out of the question...Then it was happening. I packed my rucksack and checked the timetables, synchronised train times and met at the country station and we danced into the wilderness.

Afternoons we listened to writers spin their tales, spied actors  and musicians, ate the tastiest concoctions from Budha Bowls or tiny light felafel or marmite crumpets and drank gallons of afternoon tea, ginger-beer and flower potions.

It was magical...and as the sun subsided, out came the nymphs and fairies and painted soldiers and sailers and sea creatures and the sweetest insect  of a singer lamenting the dead bees...

While you are away
My heart comes undone
Slowly unravels
In a ball of yarn

The devil collects it
With a grin
Our love in a ball of yarn

Honeysuckle syrup

Ingredients:

Use the following proportion of ingredients for the quantity that you desire
  • four cups of filtered tap water
  • two cups of honeysuckle blossom
  • one cup of honey
Method:
  1. Collect nice fresh blossoms making sure that no pesticides have been sprayed on them. Not the berries as they are poisonous. Pick over and then rinse.
  2. Place in a saucepan and cover with the water. Bring to the boil.
  3. Reduce the heat, stir in the honey and simmer for twenty minutes to infuse the flavour and aroma.
  4. Remove from the heat and strain.
  5. Pour into clean jam jars, screw the lid on and then leave to cool.
  6. Keep refrigerated when not using.
  7. Dilute to taste.

  1. How fun! I loved seeing all the photos and wish I could reach in and touch some of those fantastic looking clothes. Very cool having the beds outside under trees, I might have to drag a bed outside myself.

  5. He he...no I didn't steph. That was the lovely young lady in the 20's /30's costume with the japanese umbrella...I think she was trying to attract us to a vintage style performance else where. It was very theatrical...amazing.

  6. I was waiting until I had time to really savor your post, Debby. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really could imagine myself into being there. But I suppose that it is best that it was only an imaginary trip, or I would have been tempted to spend a boatload of money! You really do live in a magical kingdom!

    Have a happy!
    Hugs

  7. Hi Jane,
It was very tempting but I was good and just enjoyed admiring everything apart from food. I almost bought some vintage French clogs but decided not to. Hannah treated herself to the grey and white striped bloomers. She has been asking me for about the last five years to make her a pair and these were really pretty ones with a flat panel over the front with tiny little buttons so they fit beautifully and she looked really cute and demure in them.
It was a lovely whimsical escape.
    You too,
