Ooh lovely, lovely pattern. Now that my thumb has mended I'm knitting a bergen cowl with my valentine yarn. I've been wanting to make one ever since I saw it beautifully modelled here.
Don't you think it's a good idea, valentine yarn? I love flowers especially wild ones, but made 'A' promise not to buy me any when I noticed that overnight on St Valentine's Eve, they had miraculously inflated from fifteen to forty pounds in price in the village store. Nor did I need a special valentine meal as there was plenty of food in the pantry and we were busy decorating...But I did mention that I might like some valentine yarn. (I got the idea here.)
This is lovely easy knitting in the round, with just enough interest in changing the colours not to get bored. I could actually watch a film whilst making it and enjoy the process too. It only takes 100g of yarn. I used one 50g each of Debbie Bliss Blue Faced Leicester DK, in grey and gold. This is lovely soft 100% wool. The best bit is it's British, so no air miles, and it's washable.
The film, was Still Life, the first in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache murder mystery series by Louise Penny. The fact that I thought he was called Inspector Ganache for the whole of the film made it a little hard for me to take it seriously at first. But I soon found that I was drawn into the gentle (if you can call murder, gentle) story with the cosy Quebec village eccentric inhabitants. In the same way that I loved The Ladies Number One Detective Agency Series by Alexander McCall Smith. Nice easy gentle reading when that's just what you feel like. I now want to read the book as soon as I've finished this one, and if that goes well the whole series.
Now I am wondering whether to make this hat or some wristwarmers with the remaining yarn. lovely dilemma...
joining a little belatedly with ginny...

oh make the hat! love that pattern :) The cowl is beautiful and looks like it would be such a fun accessory to wear :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen it is lovely and you say a fun accessory. The hat pattern is gorgeous too. I probably will make that next.
ReplyDeleteI just saw Karen's comment and I have to agree, make the hat :)
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of knitting goodies for gifts, I received dpn's .
I've already started making it Tracey. I love the pattern. That's a great idea about the dpn's.
DeleteOh, I have to agree...make the hat! The cowl looks like it is turning out lovely, and I LOVE the idea of Valentine's Day yarn. I just may have to drop some subtle hints.;)
ReplyDeleteI've almost finished the hat and love the pattern. I'm already planning to make lots of other colour-ways and wondering if my three sisters would like it as much. I think it would make a lovely stocking filler for next Christmas.
DeleteI'm really pleased with the cowl too Emily. It was fun to make and such an easy project that again I think I'll be making more.
Maybe you can drop some Mother's Day yarn hints...

oh how pretty your bergen is debby! i'm sorry you hurt your thumb, hopefully it'll be good as new soon! (thank you for the kind words, i wear mine often!)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori, it's much better now. I'm glad that you are too. I love the cowl, thank you for directing us to the pattern. I really love it and am planning lots more. I've seen a lovely dark one on ravelry in colours that I would never have thought to use so now my head is spinning with potential new projects. lovely.

Love the cowl, unsure about the hat. Mind you I don't where a winter hat much and having short hair I hate "hat hair". I really like Debbie Bliss wool and have made a couple of children's things with it. Will have to search Still Life, love the Ladies No.1 Detective Agency, watching re-runs as we speak. Have a great weekend knitting - that cowl will be done in no time.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I really love that yarn it's nice and soft and in some lovely colour-ways. The Ladies No 1 Detective Agency is such a lovely series. I love cosy Madame Ramatswe with her cups of red bush tea and big slices of fruit cake. The books are a place to dive into at a time when things in the real world might not be so good. Lovely escapism.
DeleteI finished the cowl and almost the hat too. I've really got my knitting riddle on at the moment.
Have a good weekend
