hippie knitting and breaking eggs :: yarn along

Working small mitred squares to fashion a cosy blanket for a rock hippy soul's new apartment, the one to pick up and put down, to work in transit in the bright, bright, jewel-like colours of the cushions she loves.   And while this hippie's mother knits, she reads how a 1950's housewife would plant her garden, fill a pantry with it's produce and make marshmallows or a thrifty beauty lotion.

"Beauty Lotion. White of egg is an excellent astringent. Use what you have left in the shells when you have been breaking eggs."

  1. My family calls me a hippy, I just laugh. That is going to be a great blanket and it looks like the perfect knitting project for your busy days.
I love your old book, I have several like that from my granny, they make for fun reading.

    1. Like you Tracey I have my inner hippy, but Hannah is the rock hippy soul that I'm making the blanket for and she has a colourful bohemian/gypsy style living room planned for her new apartment when she moves to Bristol in a few months. The blanket is a nice portable little project that I can keep working on until we settle in.
That old book is great isn't it? I picked it for a few pence at a flea market on Sunday morning and can't stop reading it. Some of the advice is so wise and useful and yet other things sound ridiculous now. I love it.

    1. I know, I keep checking yours. I'm dying to start stitching mine up but plan to wait until I've made more squares so that I can balance the colours a little...or maybe that's cheating and defeats the object of it. I might have an excuse now to begin stitching.
He he...I'm sure that I remember my mum putting egg white under her eyes to reduce the dark circles when she was tired!

    1. It all began with a gift from someone's left over sock yarn so nice and random colours. It's a fun book and I'm actually learning some useful tips from it.
