yarn along

"A subtle chain of countless rings
The next unto the farthest brings;
The eye reads omens where it goes,
And speaks all languages the rose;
And, striving to be man, the worm
Mounts through all the spires of form."
Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson

"ta...dah...." I have at last begun to knit my Lida shawl. I have knitted enough rows to complete it...You wouldn't know to look at it because I have also unravelled as many. But that doesn't matter. I love working with the linen yarn and seeing the pattern evolve. That's what comes of watching subtitled Swedish Drama's at the same time as knitting lacy patterns from a chart. The pattern is simple, I just keep looking away from the chart and returning to the wrong place. Never mind I'm learning Swedish at the same time. Or instead...It seems I can't do both.

I stopped reading The Heat of the Day. I don't like leaving things unfinished and usually stoically forge on. But it was too wordy for my mood. Too many adjectives and too much dialogue whilst too little was being said, and even less left to read between the lines.  Maybe it's a winter read.

I've started reading Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is poetic....beautiful. You can download it free as a pdf or Ebook  from Project Gutenberg. But I want to get a paper copy as well, an old one. I want to study it and scribble notes in pencil in the margins.

I'm joining Ginny's yarn along at Small Things, and
Frontier Dreams this week...are you coming too?

  1. You have patience i'll give you that. I am forever pulling things out - I definitely can't do two things at the some time especially something as complicated as this.

  2. Because it's a new pattern and the yarn is beautiful to knit with I'm being very patient at the moment but I'm not sure how long that will last...I'm dying for it to start growing. I even have some different yarn to make another one when this one is completed. I'm gradually realising that I can't really do two things at once. I often have so many things on the go but am trying to concentrate on one thing at a time. I'm sure it saves so much time in the long run.

  3. Your shawl is going to be beautiful Debby and you get to learn a new language as you knit it, awesome! ;) I am so glad you love the linen yarn, I have been wanting to order a bit for here. I love the quote, I am a huge Emerson fan. Have you read John Muir?
    I hope all is well in your world and you are smiling.

  4. Thank you Tracey. We are all busy but good and keep smiling. I've missed you, been thinking about you a lot and was going to email you.
    This is my first foray into Emerson apart from the odd quote I'm excited and loving it so far but hope to read everything bit by bit.

  5. Lovely! The shawl is beautiful. Definitely one that I need to add to my list! My daughter watches Korean dramas to help with her Korean language studies... it's a fun way to learn!

    1. It is a really pretty one I hope I can do it justice with my knitting.

      Clever daughter...but it's amazing how much you can pick up and it's good for getting the accent correct...unless they have really strong regional ones.

    1. Thanks Montse. It's not a very big one so shouldn't take too long. I hope I manage to do a lot of it this weekend.

    1. It's only a few basic stitches Debbie...but it's one you have to concentrate on so as not to do as I did and pick up the wrong row.
