Recipe number fifteen from Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights is Chicken Soup with Chickpeas which you can find on page 98 of the winter lunch section. There was a cold wind in the air yesterday and although it's spring, this hearty soup was perfect for supper.
It has a slightly North African or Asian influence using spices like cumin, corriander, ginger and turmeric. As you can see I was more that a little bit heavy on the turmeric...but what an amazing shade of yellow! I used parsnip instead of turnip and I didn't have any coriander or parsley and so chopped up some bits of basil (I know it's not usually used with these spices but it actually tasted ok!)...which look rather sad in my photograph.
I have to say that this soup tastes so much better than the image... don't be put off trying it. It's has a lovely deep earthy taste and the chicken is moist and tender...lovely... I'm sure that this is another recipe inspired by Dahl's hippy childhood....
...peace and love...
...peace and love...
p.s. I think this word work really well with rice if the liquid was left to reduce further...mmm...
whoops 'chick peas' not 'chickpeas' and this 'word work' you think I'd never heard of editing wouldn't you...?!
ReplyDeleteSounds delicious. It's very much soup weather here so I'll have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteIt is delicious Caz and really filling too....not sure why the bowl looks so wonky in the photograph though!
ReplyDeleteOh I love a hearty homemade soup. It's just becoming winter in Australia so soup season is well and truly here for me! :)
